Fresh Water Resources

As an island, North Haven has limited fresh water resources. In line with North Haven's community vision and in order to make sustainable, well-informed decisions in addressing the Community Priorities, the Town is pursuing grant opportunities to learn more about the status of North Haven's fresh water resources. In conjunction with learning more about island resources, the Town and other community partners and organizations are prioritizing community education about our fresh water.

2023 Hydrogeologic Water Supply Evaluation Report
We completed a 2022 Capacity Development Grant through the State's Drinking Water Program to do a survey of island wells, a risk assessment of Fresh Pond to understand the risk of saltwater intrusion due to sea level rise and storm surge, and a resistivity transect to identify potential locations for municipal water supply wells if the Town ever needed a new drinking water source. These three assessments were conducted by Ransom Consulting, with the support of Mia Colloredo-Mansfeld, our 2021-2023 Island Fellow, and the results were compiled in the Hydrogeologic Water Supply Evaluation Report, available below.

2023 Community Education Freshwater Resource Panel

Students in the Off-Shore Year Program at the North Haven Community School hosted an educational panel with Town employees and community members on North Haven's freshwater resources. Panelists included the Glen Marquis, the Town's water treatment plant operator, Amilia Campbell, a select board member, Mia Colloredo-Mansfeld, the Town's Island Fellow, and several community members involved in agriculture, conservation, and policy including Becky Bartovics, Zeb Campbell, and Hannah Pingree, and John Stevens. 2023 Costal Community Grant
As per the recommendations in the Hydrogeologic Water Supply Evaluation Report, the Town applied for another grant -- the Coastal Community Grant -- to further study the risk of saltwater intrusion into Fresh Pond. This grant will provide funding for the purchase of transducers, data collection devices that will allow us to collect and analyze local data from Pulpit Harbor,  the Mill Stream, Heidi's Pond, and Fresh Pond in order to more accurately model the risk of saltwater intrusion under different sea level rise and storm surge scenarios. This will give the Town more nuanced information to inform mitigation strategies. This project will begin in Fall of 2023.
